Welcome to the Show

Welcome to the Show

This song is about inviting people to get away from themselves and their lives for a while. Have some fun, find a smile, lose themselves and feed their souls at a concert. When audience members connect with the music, there is a moment of truth, something we all wish we had more of in our lives; so we seek it out at shows.

There is also the common experience of entering the concert hall on one side, and realizing your seat is all the way on the other side. How we all wish we could just teleport into our seats.   lyrics

America

America

America seemed very different to me when I was young.  It has become a much darker place as I've gotten older and propaganda reigns supreme in the information age.  I used to look up to America and now I wonder...
What has happened to you?   lyrics

Infinity Reigns

Infinity Reigns

Infinity Reigns came from a moment when I looked up at the stars and wondered who I was and where I was going in this life. How many others asked the same question that day? It took magic moments over some years to develop music that conveyed the weight of this question, but also reflected some hope. The stars may be infinite, but perhaps so are we.

These questions are so fundamental, and the search for answers through magical moments in music is so core to who I am, that it led to this song name becoming the band name.

The song was performed live many times over the years. It was re-written & arranged for the ONE album.   lyrics

What If

What If

It's hard to accept that we often hold the keys to the doors we lock on ourselves. What If our lives were different because we realized this... Can a homeless person have known they would end up on the streets dreaming of their next meal? Was there a door they missed?   lyrics

Sorry

Sorry

Post-traumatic stress brings on images that haunt you like a ghost in the day, and insidiously attack you in your dreams at night. Triggers are everywhere like a mine field. Being attacked every hour of the day makes it seem like recovery is impossible.

This song was written as the sorry that all victims wish they could get from the person who hurt them, but few seldom do. Hearing the word ‘sorry’ acts as a starting point for letting go of the hurt and moving forward. One word can help the images begin to fade, and so I sang the word that I desperately wished to hear... Sorry.   lyrics

Crazy

Crazy

About the child of a schizophrenic afraid that he will lose his mind and degenerate into schizophrenia. The story is told using the metaphor of a tree losing its leaves and then falling over to the ground.   lyrics

Fallen Angel

Fallen Angel

The story of an angel that has fallen from grace and is stuck wandering around on Earth. Without wings, it is impossible to return to the world above, and at the same time, the angel still doesn’t fit in with anyone on the ground.

He avoids revealing what he is to others, and tries to blend in, which is not easy to do. But he believes he has little choice but to endure; staying covered up, waiting for his wings to grow back.

After many years, the day arrives where he cannot endure any more waiting. He decides to take action. (Solo section) He sees a cliff and runs towards it. When he gets to the edge he takes a running leap, risking death. As he hangs in the air for a timeless moment, his wings return and he realizes he could have taken this risk at any time and earned his wings back. He laments on how much time he spent waiting for something to happen...   lyrics

Fill My Eyes

Fill My Eyes

This song is about emotions below the surface and how the world fills our eyes with images that push and pull our emotions. We are all looking into each other's eyes to find love and to fullfil our dreams. Those same eyes are filled with tears at times when we struggle.

The synth part came 1st and represents deep emotions. Then guitars, bass, drums built bridges into the light. Vocal effect for verse emotions, clear for chorus awareness. The piano backdrop evolved later and unlocked haunting vocals.   lyrics

Your Story

Your Story

Each person is a puzzle to the other, and it is not always easy to find the pieces. Often the puzzle pieces that are needed to understand someone are in the past. This song is about how everyone makes more sense once you know the story of their past. When people don’t make sense, seem weird or strange, it’s often because we don’t know what’s happened to them; what forces shaped them, what environments they grew up in. The choices that they make today are related to their story, and the choices they have made along the way.

Comic books put a lot of effort into the notion of the backstory, for both heroes and villains. Real life may be more complex, but it is still true that we all have a backstory. It is also true that if we take the time to learn this story, we can be more empathetic towards those we don’t understand or agree with.   lyrics

My Tribe

My Tribe

We used to live in tribes, and it meant so much more than today's families. It wasn't only your spouse and children as a family, but more; you were part of a tribe together, and that smaller circle was connected to a bigger circle...the tribe.

It was about life and death - true survival, and the tribe was your family and it was the center of life, not a tertiary thing like today's family circles can be. I’d like to think that one's word in the tribe meant more than it does today, but this may be an idealization of the truth.

Musically I explored playing the tribal drum-type pattern on my electric guitar, thwapping the strings with my fingers, a bit like Tony Levin’s approach with Funk Fingers. This is the rhythm that starts the song off. I also got my family to each participate in singing in the intro of the song.   lyrics

A Drop of Hope

A Drop of Hope

Inspired by Malala’s story as well as the Girl Rising documentary.

The idea that someone would shoot a 14 year old girl because she wanted to learn is absolutely appalling. It’s hard to grasp that people are that afraid of women learning and seeking truth, and who believe that the only solution they have for their fear is to kill those that would choose to learn.

In too many parts of the world, women are still not able to get an education and are held as slaves and prisoners to others. This song focuses on the progression of being a prisoner, seeking change, and finally becoming free. A butterfly brings a drop of hope and becomes a catalyst. The butterfly’s freedom intersects with the path of the prisoner and reminds her that change and freedom are possible.   lyrics
